Signs Your Spring Has Failed
A visible gap in the coil
Look at the bar above the door. If the coil has a two-inch gap in it, that spring is broken.
The door feels impossibly heavy
The springs, not the opener, carry the weight. With one broken, the door can weigh 150-250 lbs.
The opener strains or gives up
Your opener is not built to lift a door alone. Running it on a broken spring will burn out the motor.
It opens a few inches then stops
A common safety response when the balance is gone.
Cables have gone slack or jumped the drum

Why replace both springs when only one broke?
They were installed at the same time and share a cycle life. The second one is typically weeks or months from failing, and a second service call costs more than the extra spring.
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
We strongly advise against it. Torsion springs hold hundreds of pounds of stored energy and cause serious injuries every year. This is the one repair worth calling a professional for.
How long do garage door springs last?
A standard spring is rated around 10,000 cycles — roughly 7 to 10 years for an average family, less if you go in and out several times a day. High-cycle springs roughly double that.
Do springs fail faster near the ocean?
Yes. Salt air corrodes spring steel, and close to the water a spring can reach the end of its life years earlier than the cycle rating suggests. On coastal homes we fit galvanized springs and stainless cables and recommend servicing twice a year instead of annually.
