Boca Raton takes how buildings look more seriously than most Florida cities. That legacy traces back to Addison Mizner's Mediterranean revival work in the 1920s, and it carries through today in citywide design expectations and, more immediately for you, in the architectural review boards that run the gated communities.
So a garage door here is not purely a mechanical decision. In Boca West, Broken Sound, Woodfield, The Sanctuary, Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club and dozens of smaller associations, the panel design, the color and sometimes the hardware finish need approval before installation. On a two or three-car garage, boards will usually expect a matched set.
The openings themselves are frequently non-standard. Estate properties run to oversized single bays, three and four-car configurations, and arched or recessed openings that no stock door fits. Those get measured and ordered, not adapted.
One thing that surprises people moving down from Miami-Dade or Broward: Boca Raton is in Palm Beach County, which is not in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone. Doors here are approved under statewide Florida Product Approval instead. Much of the city is still inside the wind-borne debris region, so impact-rated or protected openings remain the expectation — it is a different approval route, not a lower bar.
Worth knowing before you shop
A door carrying a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance is accepted in Boca Raton, because the NOA is the stricter standard. If the model your community's board likes is listed with an NOA rather than a Florida Product Approval, that is not a problem for your permit.

Is Boca Raton in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone?
No. The HVHZ covers Miami-Dade and Broward only. Boca Raton is in Palm Beach County, so doors are approved under statewide Florida Product Approval. My community has an architectural review board. How do you handle that?
We give you everything the packet needs in writing before you commit: manufacturer, model, panel design, color, finish and the product approval number. Most boards approve on that alone. If yours wants a rendering or a physical sample we'll arrange it.
I have a three-car garage. Do the doors need to match?
Most boards expect a matched set across the elevation, yes. We quote them together so the panel design and color are identical and the hardware ages at the same rate. Replacing one door now and the others later tends to produce a visible mismatch.
Can you make an arched or recessed opening work?
Yes. Estate properties here regularly have openings that no stock door fits. We measure the actual opening and order to it, including custom widths and arched heads.
